How Much?
The cost of a Drupal Theme depends on where you start. From scratch, from a PSD, from some type of html/css, or from another source and it depends on a few of questions you can ask yourself to start adding up the estimated cost:
- How complexity is the Design? Making this pretty ain't always easy, in fact, it usually isn't. This like rounded edges, hyper roll-over images, overlapping images, etc, usually take extra time it cost more. However, most sites need some additions, they should have elements with a special look and feel. Based in the level of skill required to recreate that from a static document (psd) will add to the cost to produce.
- How many pages require a custom layout? Most sites require a minimum of 2, a unique home page and the inner pages. Some designs require additions here, over there, under this or that... which all takes planning and time to ensure a 'fit' with Drupal.
- How many modules and different elements need to be styled? There are hundreds of Dupal modules, millions of combinations, and billions of menu possibilities. A theme can be created generic enough to address a lot of possibilities, but some modules in durpal do not make it easy (o.k. down right difficult) for theming. Depending on views and panels (two popular modules you might use) theming is not easy at all, and may require themable function overrides in the template.php file and/or custom node/view template files.
- How much knowledge did your designer have about web development, and Content Management Systems? Did they consider the size and loading time of images, are the fonts 'web safe', are there different images representing the same links in different pages, are the colors, images, and fonts changing from page to page.
- How good is the code? (if css or wordpress) Did the coder understand Content Management Systems? For a content management system to use a theme, there are a number of best practices for naming conventions, which elements to give selectors to, and how to structure the layout. Then there is the issue of ensuring the code is cross browser compatible, the elephant in the corner so to speak.
Pricing
I work on an hourly rate, I only charge for the time I spend working on your theme. So if it takes 5 hours, I bill 5 hours, if it takes my 20 hours, then I bill 20 hours. You get what you pay for, I get paid for the work I do, and we both walk away happy as pie. :)
